Why Starlink?
Traditional mobile data connections often struggle in rural areas, exactly the kind of places caravan / motorhome owners love to visit. Starlink, with its low-earth orbit satellite network, offers fast and consistent broadband in areas where 4G and 5G just can’t reach. Even with a good 4G / 5G signal that is not a guarantee of enough bandwidth for usable use.
We installed this Starlink Gen2 dish using the Starlink Pivot mount which was both bonded and screwed to the roof of the caravan. This mount enables the dish to be removed from the roof whilst traveling or to re-position the dish away from the caravan if pitched under trees or other obstructions.

The cable was routed through the roof to the inside of the caravan using a gland. A external IP66 Cat6 coupler was used to enable the cable for the dish to be easily removed but remain watertight
Inside the caravan we fitted a Cat6 pass through coupler to enable the Starlink Gen2 router to be connected to the dish and disconnected when needed. The Router is held in place using a wall mount designed to secure the Gen2 router.

The result is a fully removable Starlink setup that can be taken home between holidays. Starlink service plans can be paused when not used on a month by month basis. This makes using Starlink for internet access in mobile applications good value for money once the intiall investment in the hardware is made.
With the Starlink Gen3 hardware it is possible to mount the dish almost flat on the roof. In this case the Gen2 hardware had allready been owned for some time.
Starlink also now offer a plan for 10GB per month for only £8.00 (correct at June 2025)
